DAILY STOCKMARKET REPORT 4 January 2010

London - UK stocks closed higher on New Year’s Eve, after a subdued half day trading session, and registering a 22 percent year on year increase for 2009, its biggest annualised gain since 2008. At 1230, the FTSE closed 15.02 points higher at 5412.88, driven by strength in banks and miners. Banks added the most points to the index, recovering from recent falls at the end of a topsy turvy year. Lloyds Banking Group, RBS, Standard Chartered and Barclays added 0.4 to 1.7 percent.

DAILY STOCKMARKET REPORT 23 December 2009

London - The FTSE 100 rose 34.67 points to close at 5,328.66 yesterday. Energy shares lifted the blue chip index after Opec said it would not change its oil output. In contrast miners were among the biggest losers, including Fresnillo, Kazakhmys and Xstrata. This morning the FTSE is 35.77 points higher at 5,364.43. Investors will be eyeing the minutes from the Bank of England’s latest interest rate policy meeting, scheduled for release at 0930 GMT.

London - The FTSE 100 rose 34.49 points higher to 5,320.26 yesterday. Mining stocks were stronger after metal prices rose. Banks were also higher after the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision agreed effectively to delay enforcement of new capital adequacy rules for major banks. Today the FTSE is 18.45 points lower at 5,310.81. Banks and miners retreat from yesterday’s gains, with Lloyd’s biggest faller, down 2.2%.

DAILY STOCKMARKET REPORT 16 December 2009

London - The FTSE 100 fell 29.57 points to close at 5,285.77 yesterday. British Airways was one of the biggest fallers, down 2.2%, as investors calculated the potential cost of the 12-day strike over the Christmas period. This morning the FTSE is 15.96 points higher at 5,301.73. Rentokil and Rexam lead the risers, up 2.5% while United Utilities leads the fallers, off 2%, after going ex-dividend.

London - The FTSE 100 gained 40.48 points to close at 5,244.37 yesterday. RBS and Lloyds were the leading shares on the index following European financial companies higher. The FTSE 100 is currently 60.18 points higher at 5,304.55, with all 100 stocks in positive territory
