UK government seeks to protect the British sausage
Regular readers will recall the stories we posted about the Melton Mowbray pie being granted the status as a protected regional product and that the name Newcastle Brown Ale ceased to be a protected regional product as production was moved from the area where it had been brewed and become iconic. It is still a registered trade mark so don’t all dash off to begin brewing your own version of this famous beer.
But now the British government has apparently applied to the EU authorities to register the Cumberland sausage as a protected regional product with the support of the Cumberland Sausage Association - more about the association here http://www.traditionalcumberlandsausage.com/cumberland-sausage-association.html
So we can hold our heads up high as we travel through Italy or France this summer knowing we have products which are in the same exalted company as Parma ham and Champagne.
