WEEE - Waste Electrical And Electronic Equipment

If you manufacture or retail electrical or electronic equipment (EEE), then you should be aware of the WEEE Regulations 2006 which came into force this summer. The costs of compliance could be significant. Put very simply, if you manufacture, import or re-brand EEE and place it on the UK market, you must join a Producer Compliance Scheme (see

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/commondata/acrobat/approved_schemes_1734809.pdf )

If you provide new EEE directly to household users/consumers you will be a ‘distributor’, and must provide facilities to your customers to return old equipment free of charge.  If you export EEE, you may require approval from the Environment Agency.  The Environment Agency has published a list of Approved Exporters and Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities for WEEE.

There are ways of partnering with local weee organisations to comply with the regulations that can offer cost reductions - especially for small companies.
